According to Tripadvisor’s inaugural air travel survey, announced yesterday, one in three Australians feel that air travel has not improved at all compared to five years ago. It doesn’t stop us from flying however, with at leats 31 per cent of respondents planning on flying more this year than last year, and as many as 51 per cent at least flying as often as they did last year. So what don’t we like about flying? When asked to share their biggest complaints about air travel, lack of seat comfort and other passengers top the list, with the Top 5 complaints being:

Travelers biggest complaints with airlines

  1. Uncomfortable seats or limited legroom
  2. Other passengers (e.g. loud children)
  3. Costly airline fees and ticket prices
  4. Unpredictable flight delays
  5. Multiple airport security measures

Seventy per cent of respondents said it is important or extremely important to have their preferred seat choice. If they had it their way, 57 per cent would take an aisle seat and less than 1 per cent would prefer the dreaded middle seat. Sixty-one per cent do not consider low cost carriers to still be low cost when taking into account the additional costs and taxes.

In fact, sixty-nine per cent are willing to pay up to 20 per cent more to fly on a full service airline versus a low cost carrier travelling at the same time on the same route. Sixty-one per cent do not consider low cost carriers to still be low cost when taking into account the additional costs. recently, consideration of fellow travellers is paramount for a comfortable and happy journey. The five most annoying etiquette faux pas, according to respondents:

  1. Rude seat recliners
  2. Parents not controlling their children
  3. Child kicking your seat back
  4. Sneezing/coughing without covering up
  5. Blocking the aisle of an airline or taking too long to put away your bags

Thirty-five per cent of respondents would be willing to pay slightly or substantially more for a child free flight. It seems travelers are rather law-abiding, with 81 per cent of passengers happy to switch off electronic devices during take-off and landing. Less than 10 per cent have ignored, or forgotten, about the liquid restrictions and packed more than the 100ml allowance. And, not surprisingly, technology is increasingly important to flyer with a quarter of respondents saying they would choose one airline over another if it offered Wi-Fi.

The top three reasons for using a smartphone when it comes to air travel are to research flight prices (35%), check flight status (33%) and check into a flight (29%). "Flyers continue to voice concerns about the challenges associated with air travel, such as extra fees and limited legroom," says Andrew Wong, Director of TripAdvisor Flights, Asia Pacific.

"However, it seems equally clear that these challenges are not limiting the demand for flights, including long-haul.” Qantas tops the most popular airlines list, with 25 per cent of respondents naming it their favourite; followed closely by Singapore Airlines at 23 per cent and Emirates at 13 per cent.
