Buying a Super Yacht !

Buying a Super Yacht

Buying a superyacht is perhaps the ultimate luxury item, many make the purchase and almost all of them seem to enjoy the experience once they have done it. Hein Velema, CEO of Fraser Yachts says, “You don’t buy a super yacht because it makes sense, in fact that is the last thing it does! But why do so many successful businessmen purchase yachts? They do so because it gives them the ultimate feeling of pride. You charter a yacht to experience a lifestyle but having your own superyacht gives much more satisfaction. It’s all about emotion and when you analyse it, emotion makes no sense at all.”

Buying a Super Yacht

At any one time there are plenty of yachts on the market and choosing the right one takes time, care and attention so the first step for most buyers is to find a reputable yacht broker to guide, advise and look after all the time-consuming research, legal, technical and logistical factors.

Jonathan Beckett, CEO of Burgess Yachts says, “Virtually all superyacht purchases (whether pre-owned or new build) are preceded by several charter experiences. For many, a superyacht is probably the highest value single asset they will ever buy and is influenced by a complex combination of factors including the financial and investment aspects as well as the emotional and lifestyle elements. Providing expert professional advice is at hand, owning a superyacht can be one of the most rewarding experiences that comes with the privilege of great wealth.”

Buying a Super Yacht

Richard Beattie owner of the 46 metre Big Fish says, "You buy a superyacht for the same general reason you buy any luxury item: because it makes a statement about who you are; because it adds unique beauty and enriching enjoyment to your life. I bought Big Fish, specifically, because she represents for me the ultimate form of freedom: the opportunity to enjoy peak experiences and adventures with my family and friends in the most beautiful parts of the world on precisely my own terms. Big Fish always awaits me, wherever, whenever, however and with whomever I wish."

Buying a Super Yacht

To some owning superyachts is like an infection. One owner told us, “Commissioning your own superyacht means you get to take control of the most intricate project you'll ever be involved with and that is the drawing up of the specification of a yacht you plan to build.” That same owner has built no less than five yachts and he has on one occasion, started work on a yacht before he had taken delivery of the last one he built!

By chartering a superyacht in advance of their own build potential owners may be able to refine their views on what they do and don’t like but many equally believe that with the right guidance from an experienced team of advisors it is not always necessary to have chartered before buying.

Buying a Super Yacht

Bob Saxon, President of the International Yacht Collection IYC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Trinity Yachts believes it makes sense to charter before you buy. He says. “It exposes potential owners to the joy of the yachting lifestyle without the financial commitment. If someone is considering the purchase of their own superyacht chartering sharpens the focus.”

Robert Cordle, CEO of Burlington Yachts, does not choose to list boats for sale or charter. Instead, he prefers to work for the purchaser as an independent buying specialist. He says, “Owning a superyacht is like having your own floating boutique hotel, with your choice of décor, Michelin starred cooking and 5 star service. You can explore the coastlines of the world in luxury at your leisure. Given today’s economic environment there has never been a better time to buy. There are many options on the market and prices are under enormous pressure. The challenge is sifting through the numerous options and negotiating the best terms to find the perfect fit for your needs at the right price.”

Buying a Super Yacht

When concept of ownership becomes strong enough to become a desire it is time to call in some help from designers. Mark Tucker is an interior designer and heads up Design Unlimited, a firm responsible for many superyacht interiors. “Our experiences gained from dealing with numerous Clients over the years leads me to believe that the major advantage in a client buying their own superyacht is the absolute freedom to create their very own bespoke dream yacht. At the outset the options are limited only by the clients’ wishes and it is an exciting prospect to be given a blank sheet of paper and to let their imagination run wild with the possibilities that can be explored in order to create the ultimate personal reflection of their tastes. I believe that the clients that enjoy their superyachts the most are those that impose their own taste and personalities on their yachts, rather than compromising these ideals for commercial reasons.”

Dickie Bannenberg of the interior design firm Bannenberg and Rowell is more direct when we ask why should anyone buy a superyacht. He said, “I think the only honest answer is "because you can". Don't try to kid yourself it's an investment or a business venture. But do not forget you are bringing together a team to do something extraordinary for you.”

Buying a Super Yacht

Theo Hooning is the Secretary General of SYBAss the trade association that represents the interests of the larger more established yacht building yards “If you were to ask me why anyone would buy a superyacht, I would say the answers to the question are unlimited. Custom-built superyachts give buyers infinite options to fulfil needs, wishes and dreams and I believe that is the essence of owning a superyacht.”

Billy Smith Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Trinity Yachts in the USA finds the superyacht industry fascinating. He says, “There are two facets to superyacht ownership. The first is the incredible level of service having your own yacht provides an owner. The standard of accommodation offered by some of these beautiful yachts is incredible and add in well trained crew offering a guest to staff ration not seen anywhere outside the White House in Washington DC and it is easy to see why many of these superyachts far outstrip the most palatial of seven star land based hotels when it comes to being pampered. The second is one of mobility. You can own the most fabulous villa in the world have it set in the most enviable location imaginable with a view to die for but you cannot move it! With a superyacht you have your own mobile villa. It is still your home with your own clothes in the closet, it is still the same bed were you go to sleep, it is still staffed by your same loyal and trusted staff but it can be moved. This means one vacation you can have at home in Bali and the next one can be in Monaco!”

Whatever the motive for owning a superyacht, the opportunity exists to get all the advice you need at the Monaco Yacht Show every year. Here designers, brokers and builders are on hand to dole out helpful hints and advice and fortunately because so many attend the show themselves there is a sparkling opportunity to quiz the people that really know the answers: yacht owners themselves.
