Wine & Gourmet combine in Spain

Hotel Marques Spain

Like a strange vision of the future, the Hotel Marqués de Riscal rises out of the small medieval village of Elciego in Northern Spain. Completed in 2006, the hotel’s avant-garde design took the tradition and fame of Rioja wines and gave them a whimsical twist that’s grown to great popularity among lovers of luxury, art, and a good bottle.

It seems like a logical enough idea to combine a winery with a gourmet temple and a hotel, but oddly enough, it happens less than you might imagine. In the Rioja Alavesa region of Spain, the Marqués de Riscal City of Wine does just that, under a gleaming avante-garde roof. One of three areas that make up the La Rioja winemaking region, the Riojo Alavesa territory is known for the age of the vines it contains, and the resulting characteristic flavor that they produce. Surrounded by vineyards, the cellars here date from 1858 and represent the proud tradition of Spanish Rioja wines – there’s enough space underground to house up to eight million bottles.

The beautiful, colored curves that swoop up into the sky are the work of Canadian architect Frank O. Gehry, who also designed the Bilbao Guggenheim museum. Gehry was given the task of creating luxury accommodations for guests of the vineyards and surrounding area. Two wings (connected by a suspended glass-walkway) house 43 luxury rooms and suites finished in leather and raw maple, set off with dark marble baths and fittings. Gehry also worked with architects like Alvar Aalto to create custom avant-garde furniture specially for the project and oversaw the inclusion of ultra-modern technology such as high-end VOIP telephones and Bang & Olufsen Beovision televisions.

Beyond its design however, the complex serves to bring together the region’s outstanding wine and gourmet culture under one roof. Visitors can look forward to the creative Basque-Riojan cuisine of Michelin star chef Francis Paniego – served with dishware, silverware created exclusively for the Marqués de Riscal restaurant. For the dedicated wine lover, there are thousands of international wines in the hotel’s collection which can be sampled. An extensive library is also available with a massive collection of books covering a variety of luxury topics – perfect to curl up with in front of the roaring fireplace in the rooftop wine bar. To top off your experience, Turkish baths, Hammam baths, barrel baths, and many other spa treatments are offered in the mixed wood ambiance of the spa.

Moscow Metropol Restaurant

Metropol Moscow

The Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin are a mere three minutes away from the Bolshoi Theater. It would be hard to imagine a better location for a Moscow hotel with an attitude than right in the middle of this troika. The Hotel Metropol was conceived in 1901 by arts patron Savva Mamontov, and designed by architects such as Walcott, Vrubel, Kekushev and Chekhonin. The diversity of the architect group involved in the project led to the hotel being dubbed "The 20th Century Tower of Babylon".

Dinner in the sky, Above Paris & Other Cities

Dining high above the rooftops of a city is not for those who are afraid of heights. We’re not talking about a normal tower or rooftop terrace, but about an evening experience that takes you 50 meters in the air – “Dining in the Sky”. Guests dine at a table that is suspended from a crane, heavenly views guaranteed. Together with 22 other guests, “Dinner in the Sky” takes you up, up, up on a table attached to a special platform where a chef prepares a meal for an experience you’re not likely to soon forget.
