Seville city of culture

Seville Spains first city of culture

The futuristic Metropol Parasol claims to be the largest wooden building in the world. Home to Moorish monuments, fine art, flamenco, endless festivals and the world’s largest Gothic cathedral, Seville is a city of passion where matadors and cantadors still make their mark.

24 Hours in Vientiane, Laos

Sleepy Vientiane in Laos

Sleepy Vientiane seems little more than a village. Snuggling a curve in the Mekong River, Laos's capital city is a charming clutch of decrepit French villas and art deco Russian buildings mingled with splays of hot pink bougainvillea and the golden spires of Buddhist temples reaching above elongated palms. I lived and worked in Vientiane in the late 1990s. Laos was just opening up after 25 years of rigid communist rule and the city felt trapped in time. There were no ATMs or paved roads. Communications were sketchy, and people got around on tuk-tuks and bicycles. Land-locked and mostly agrarian, it was reported that the country's paltry income came from foreign aid and air rights, the fee airlines pay to fly over a country. The Lao preferred sleep and beer with ice, over economics. I loved every bit of it.

The Barai Hyatt Hua Hin Thailand

Hyatt Barai at Hua Hin Thailand

Spa Trek, the journey to distant Spa Galaxies If Hua Hin is the new spa galaxy, The Barai is by far the brightest constellation. This design dialogue is not lost in the architecture as one is swept into a womblike avenue that is the entrance way to this majestic spa. Small star-shaped windows of stained glass and some open to nature provide suspicions of light filtering through the darkness. Apart from the coolness within I can’t help but notice the acoustics, with long passageways and high vaulted ceilings, sounds come as whisperings from afar or they amplify the voice. I suspect to some this is already quite confrontational, those accustomed to city streets and all that white noise we become immune to and yet try our darndest to escape from.

Hong Kong Eye in 2013

Hong Kong Eye

Hong Kong's waterfront gets OTT with killer skyscrapers, laser show and now a giant wheel to be completed by December 2013. The government Lands Department has posted a tender notice for short-term tenancy of the plot in front of Central piers 9 and 10 on Hong Kong Island. The approximately 9,620-square-meters of prime waterfront real estate is up for grabs by any operator of an observation wheel who can set up and manage the facility for at least three years.

Shambala Sacred place of Bliss

shambala sacred place of bliss

There is something about Bali that captures you. If it’s your first time you will be captivated, if it’s to return, it is a reconnection which occurs the moment you get your first glimpse of expansive green. It will have you asking your driver to turn the air-con off and in my case, the window is opened and again I am in awe of the verdant vegetation and commanding nobility of towering treetops and sinuous tributaries running off the paternal Ayung River.
