Victoria Falls : Rendezvous with Missionary Livingstone

Experiencing wanderlust? Longing for the sun? Then let us take you this weekend to the place where the day throws no shadow, where the “big five” live feeding the myths of the southern Africa.

The "smoke that thunders" of the Zambezi

The Victoria Falls has been one of the main attractions of the African continent since the enthusiastic descriptions of the missionary David Livingstone in 1855. Million gallons of water from the Zambezi River tumble over a 1.7 km-wide cliff down into a narrow gorge. The Scotsman Livingstone was the first European to see this spectacle of nature and out of his loyalty to Queen Victoria, named them after her.

Magic of the rainforest

Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia, is located below the equator, between Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique and South Africa. In the easternmost tip of the country, the Victoria Falls are in an area declared a national park. Dozens of tours take you to the paths through the tropical rain forest.

The rain forest with its huge mahogany trees and wild fig trees is home to countless birds, butterflies, orchids and ferns. Although the Zambezi River plunges down with the tremendous force, locals bathe in the water-filled rock hollows right on the edge of the abyss.

“Gazed upon by angels in their flight”

Some say that the view is best from the air, either by plane, helicopter or a hot air balloon. But David Livingstone wrote in his diary, about the Victoria Falls "but scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight." So, to not let the words of the explorer go to waste, some tourist companies offer "Flight of the Angels,” over the Victoria Falls.

The best place to linger: the Victoria Falls Hotel

The town Victoria Falls offers a fairly wide selection of accommodation, from pure luxury to backpacker lodges and campgrounds. The Victoria Falls Hotel is one of the finest hotels in Zimbabwe since 1904.

A sundowner on the river trip on the Zambezi

The Falls themselves are not the only attraction. For the adventurous visitors white-water rafting is offered through the rapids or Victoria Falls Bridge bungee-jumping. This bridge was part of John Cecil Rhodes attempt to make his dream of a railway line that went from Cape Town to Cairo a reality. The river cruises above the Falls are not so reckless. They are best at sunset with a sundowner in hand and a few snacks, especially when the animals run alongside the riverbank.
Lions, crocodiles and antelopes

In the vicinity of the Falls that counts as the highest waterfall in Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the Zambezi National Park, where you can see elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes and various species of antelope. The area includes lush river vegetation on the banks of the Zambezi, open savannah and woodlands further inland. This is also a home to thousands of Nile crocodiles.

A bridge connects Zimbabwe and Zambia

The town of Victoria Falls lies on the south bank of the Zambezi River near the eponymous Victoria Falls. On the north bank, which is Zambia, is the town of Livingstone, named after the explorer and missionary.

Two towns are connected by a road and railway bridge, spanning the 100-meter deep gorge of the Zambezi River, the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. The best view of the bridge is from the terrace of the colonial Victoria Falls during the afternoon tea with cake or at the Sundowner Dinner in the restaurant just near Livingstone.
