Beached on Galapagos

Barely 20 minutes after touching down in the Galapagos Islands, we realize we're in a parallel universe. It's not the green volcano or the austere candelabra cactuses, nor the dusty, ramshackle town on the island of San Cristobal. It's the inhabitants. Piles of them snooze in the sun under the children's play equipment. They loll around outside the shops on the beachfront promenade and trespass on moored boats. They burp, scratch and bark like a bunch of old drunks and generally behave as if the humans matter not at all.

36 Hours in Brasília

DESPITE the modernistic monuments by the legendary Oscar Niemeyer, Brazil’s retro-futuristic capital city — erected on an expanse of dry plains in central Brazil in the late 1950s and ’60s — has generally drawn few visitors who didn’t have business with the federal government. But as Brazil’s economy booms and its world influence increases, Brasília is coming of age, gaining a new museum here, a cool bridge there, top-shelf restaurants everywhere.

Jordanian Odyssey

Emptiness surrounds us as we drive into the vast black basalt landscape of Jordan`s Eastern Desert. Somewhere ahead lies the enigmatic Desert Castles we’ve come to explore. Or so we’re told. Along this ribbon of asphalt we see nothing but barren earth evaporating into a gauzy, treeless horizon. Then the stark monotony is broken by a passing road sign several of us read aloud: “Iraq, 240 km.”

San Miguel de Allende

New Ways to Stay San Miguel’s classic Casa de Sierra Nevada, now part of the Orient-Express hotel group, continues to set the bar with its 37 handsomely furnished rooms and suites scattered among five restored colonial houses in the city center and one lavishly landscaped villa on the edge of town; casadesierranevada.com. But the recent debuts of two very different properties are offering travelers exciting new choices. Aimed at Mexico City weekenders, the brand-new Hotel Matilda, just off cobbled Aldama street, is a sleek boutique establishment with 32 stylish rooms, a nifty infinity pool, a farm-to-table restaurant, and a spa that’s already been dubbed one of the tops in town.
