The Orient Express Mandalay Cruise

I am the captain of a prestigious ship. My life is like no other. The lands and extraordinary landscapes are exceptional and make every moment of my life, a magical moment. I command with pleasure this jewel of the Orient-Express company, called "Road to Mandalay". Our cruises are of various lengths, but it is always with some excitement that I live each and every trip departure. My desire to offer an exceptional moment and the discovery of a country that is unlike any other lead us on the road from a former British colony once called Burma, and has been known for some years under the sweet name of Myanmar.

As I’m writing these words, our journey began three days ago. It has already been 72 hours that fit in the memory of this lady with whom I had the pleasure of sharing my table last night. She revealed the pleasure she had experienced starting our journey in this country called Golden Land. I must admit that the spectacular sunsets on those landscapes drawn in golden pagodas and forests earned it this enchanting name. Then she told me especially about her feelings and discoveries. The arrival in Mandalay, the capital gave her the tone of this cruise called "The gorges of the Far North." We had to leave for a cruise of 12 days/11 nights and it is true that our adventure began in the heavy and almost suffocating heat, but the river banks refreshed the 82 lucky and happy guests of our sublime ship.

There also is the well-being and the comfort offered by this magnificent ship run by that prestigious company that is Orient-Express.

I remember while writing the words about the arrival of our ship in 1995. It had been totally renovated, and I feared the worst going back on board. But it was a unique decor designed by an interior design agency which took place before my eyes. Inhabited by the small key that signs the elegance of the Orient-Express company, the ship "Road to Mandalay" had been dressed in a sumptuous decor inviting passengers to escape. I remember having visited each of the five categories. 43 suites were distributed as follows: 1 Governor's Suite, 18 State, 4 Superior, 16 Deluxe and 4 Single. Our passengers had plenty to choose from among these 43 cabins but I admit that my preference went to the Governor's Suite.

Talking with this lady, I rediscovered the pleasure experienced by passengers on board this magnificent ship. Generally, the excitement and emotion are introduced while lifting of the anchor towards Mingun. This is where my work begins. We leave to discover the largest bell in the world and our “Road to Mandalay “, this famous boat invites us to go from top to bottom of Myanmar. The famous pagoda Thihadaw fills our passengers with joy as well as visits to various villages. I walk often on the various bridges to ensure the passenger comfort and explore their emotions.

Bhamo is our home base for the night. Rice fields, countryside, our expert guides take pleasure to have you discover Bhanmo and Yunnan. But it is already time to hit the road. It is now in a train that part of the trip will take place until the station of Naba leads to a moment of discovery in the heart of the jungle.

In the midst of this adventure, I guess that passengers need rest, so the boat takes the waves. Then the village of Shwe Kyet Yet unveils its charm and provides an overview of tribal dances before dinner on board. And it's time to say goodbye.

A final sunset on the plains of Bagan, last visits of historic sites, a final performance made by local artists and a Last Supper, the night is decidedly short and that's when I see the couples on the bridges, walking hand in hand, more in love than ever. I often hear a man promising his wife to return to the sublime "Road to Mandalay" to enjoy again and again the excellence perfection of the service of the Orient-Express Company.
