Sebel Pier One Harbor View Suites Sydney

Can a night at a city hotel rival the screensaver glam factor of an over the-water bungalow in some distant tropical location ? We headed to Sydney’s Sebel Pier One to spend a decadent weekend at one of their luxurious new Harbour View Suites perched over the waters of Sydney Harbour.

Late Friday afternoon, Sydney Harbour is a kaleidoscope of traffic; on the water, across the Harbour Bridge and even above it. Powerful watercraft of every kind hurries past lazy pleasure cruisers and yachts.  The famous Harbour Bridge is almost close enough to touch, and above, helicopters, aircraft and even a seaplane criss-cross the sky. The spectacle, in the haze of afternoon sunshine is dizzying.  Or perhaps that’s the ice-cold glass of French champagne served on the expansive deck, front and centre of the action, in prime viewing position, from one of The Sebel Pier One’s new Balcony Suites.

Completed in March this year, the four Harbour View Balcony Suites and three Harbour View Suites are a stunning celebrity-styled addition to the hotel which opened in 1999, a redevelopment of the historic  Pier One shipping and passenger wharf. Located at Dawes Point, just west of The Rocks and opposite the famous landmark of Luna Park,  the hotel is a hub for the renewed public interest in the area, with its theatres, restaurants, harbour side parks and walk-ways and the ever-present glorious views of the harbour, the Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.

The history is still evident in the structure of the hotel and the balcony suites; the exposed wide beams and panelling of the former wharf are used to great effect, blended effortlessly with the contemporary styled and neutral toned decor and add to the sense of place ...and space flooded with natural light.  My Balcony suite has a huge deck bathed in late afternoon sunshine, complete with designer cane day bed and arm chairs but each suite has its own unique configuration.

The suites are seemingly built out over the harbour itself and the balconies decadently offer enough room (the largest an impressive 40sq metres) for an exclusive outdoor cocktail party, (or in our case, a party for two) above and apart from the function crowd enjoying the drinks and views on the wharf-front  below us.

The generous open plan suite is cleverly designed to ensure the sensational views, arguably the best in Sydney, may be accessed through floor-to- ceiling windows from the king-sized bed, the freestanding cocoon-style bath in the flow-through generous bathroom area or from the inviting day bed in the separate living area.

All of the spacious new suites feature a marble topped wet bar with Nespresso coffee machine, marble topped working desk with iPod docking station and Wifi internet access and if you do tire of the view- not one but two LED flat screen TVs – one of which rises from the bed base.

Choose to soak away tensions in the freestanding egg-shaped bath infused with the Appelles Apothecary bath bomb or enjoy the soothing sensation of the multi-directional rain shower. The exclusive hotel amenities are definitely a designer match for the outsized and elegant bathroom. There’s alluring old- fashioned packaging for bathing caps, and satisfyingly large apothecary-styled bottles of conditioner shampoo and lotions.

Hotel rooms are often the last place a city visitor wishes to spend their time, except to sleep. The opposite is true of the Sebel’s Harbour View Suites.  Once there, there is no desire or need to venture out.   As evening falls the views change irresistibly to feature sunset colours and the myriad harbour lights. Luna Park sparkles garishly from its perch across the harbour and party boats cruise past, their celebrations adding fun and a voyeuristic element to our private party.

At wharf level, the hotel’s Front Restaurant & Bar offers an atmospheric waterside experience with modern Australian cuisine. The landing dock creaks gently as the wash of passing boats laps against its side. A boy sits with his fishing line and basket, couples stroll past us along the wharf’s length in a European style promenade as we sip margaritas and enjoy perfectly cooked Pan Roasted Beef Fillet with caramelised shallots, king brown mushrooms and cafe de Paris butter and the freshest Almond and Herb Encrusted Blue-eye with Citrus Pepper Scallops and a Baby Herb Salad.  The timeless atmosphere on the wharf and the surrounding harbour immerses us in its history and we retire to our Balcony suite to savour the sights and sound of the night- time harbour.

A busy weekend on the water in full swing by the time we enjoy our favourite morning Nespressos back on our over- the- water balcony. A walk around the point under the Harbour Bridge leads towards Circular Quay and the Opera House. Looking back at the hotel we can see evidence of the wharf designed previously for both cargo and passenger traffic. From the beginning, Pier One and its neighbouring wharves were upheld for their design and technological advancement allowing access at two levels.

Walsh Bay is now one of Sydney’s burgeoning arts precincts with both the Sydney Dance Company and Sydney Theatre Company mere steps away from the hotel. Or spend a day on the water; the hotel offers a private jetty for direct access to the Harbour via water taxi or chartered vessel of your choice.

Who needs a remote tropical getaway when Sydney boasts sumptuous over-the water suites offering  up-close and personal views of one of the world’s most exciting harbours for a pampered, celebrity-style break.

The Sebel Pier One Harbour View Suites are available from US$660 ($A$700) per room per night midweek, and from US$1,040 (A$1100) per room per night on the weekend.
