Rent a Private Jet

Rent a Private Jet for $50,000

Can private jet travel really be affordable? Yes if you have $50,00. Evidence is growing that it’s not just for the one-percent, thanks to a crop of new operators who are shaking up the stodgy corporate-jet business. By using smaller, more fuel-efficient aircraft, and innovations like ride-sharing, some carriers have made it possible to hire a jet for a weekend getaway to Maine or Palm Beach a splurge, but one costing a fraction of, saying, buying a share in a new Lear Jet.

One problem is testing out these claims: apples-to-apples comparisons between the competing jet services have historically been difficult. But several entrepreneurs are shaking up the business in ways that should make it more transparent. One notable example is JetSuite, which just introduced a new tool to let fliers calculate the total hit to their wallet. Much like airfare consolidators used by bargain hunters, the tool compares various options from JetSuite and its rivals , but with the added costs included. The company also uses social media and is active on Facebook, where it posts last-minute “daily deals,” selling trips on flights that might otherwise go empty. Recent postings included a $536 trip for a plane holding four people from Las Vegas to Monterey, California, which works out to $134 per person if you fill up the flight.

One caveat: You need to make a deposit of $50,000 to get the full range of benefits, which is still about half of what major lines like NetJet’s Marquis Card require. But membership isn't required to take advantage of JetSuite's deals, Wilcox notes.

“We kind of see ourselves as the Southwest Airlines of the industry,” explains CEO Alex Wilcox, a veteran of JetBlue and Virgin Atlantic. Wilcox notes that, unlike jet brokers who act as middleman and don’t own planes, JetSuite has its own fleet that includes the four-seat Phenom 100 light jets plus a new crop of WI-FI–enabled Citation CJ3s, which can seat six.

JetSuite may be the classic “industry disruptor,” says Wilcox, but several others are vying for that title; one of the newest ones, an innovative membership club called Wheels Up, is a JetSuite partner. The program works like this:  members pay $15,750 upfront to join, which entitles them to an array of flights starting at $3950 an hour for an eight person plane (or $493 a person) which would cover the cost of flying, say, from New York to Nantucket.

Founder Kenny Dichter recently showed off the company’s two main plane types: a King Air 350i (actually not a jet, but a turboprop) that can seat up to eight, and a Cessna Citation Excel that can accommodate eight or nine. It has other planes on tap via arrangements with partners like JetSuite and Beechcraft and for longer flights, Vista Jet and operator Jet Aviation. Dichter says he defines his mission as “further democratizing private aviation.”

And sure, these players aren’t charging Spirit Airlines prices, but the perks (if you can afford them) are numerous: freedom from jam-packed planes, gabby seatmates, and bad food—not to mention those long TSA lines.
